Reimaging the Carceral State with Keeda Haynes

in collaboration with the Santa Cruz County Office of the Public Defender

Reimagining the carceral state is needed. Last Thursday’s event was a chance to have two expert Black women attorneys speak to that.

It was an honor partnering with the Santa Cruz County Office of the Public Defender, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the National Association of Public Defense.

Our conversation with Keeda J. Haynes and Lori James-Townes was powerful, inspiring, and important.

A Celebration of Black Art!

Many thanks to The Liminal Space Collective for bringing together a creative space for artists and the community. The presence of Black Art enhanced the whole experience and was an excellent way to get together as a community. 🤎💗

It was great to see creations from local artists. Such as one of our Co-founders, Cheryl Williams who showcased handcrafted jewelry

Madonna Camel, brought amazing mixed media collages that highlight our culture and history, keep an eye out for her events in the community

Tia McCord, shared her talents with face gems to keep everyone looking fantastic and brought smiles to so many faces

Wes Weatherspoon, created our Santa Cruz Black mural used in the flyer for the event!

A Mixer to Honor Ketanji Brown Jackson

On 8/3/22 , Santa Cruz Black held its inaugural event, A Mixer to Honor Ketanji Brown Jackson, at the Resource Center for Nonviolence.

Ketanji Brown Jackson was nominated as the 116th Associate Justice and first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States on 2/25/22. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on 4/7/22. This momentous occasion, while long overdue, is historic and important. SCB looked to the community to come together in acknowledgment of the barriers broken and of the experience and wisdom Justice Jackson brings to SCOTUS.

Chef Damani Thomas of Oswald nourished those in attendance, local breweries and wine supported the event as well: The Slough Brewing Collective, Corralitos Brewing Co., Fruition Brewing, Santa Cruz Cider Co., El Vaquero Winery. August Lee Stevens provided live music entertainment with her band, and NYT Bestselling Author & former Stanford dean Julie Lythcott-Haims brought the house down with her keynote address.

Thank you all for your support!
