Neighborhood Game Night!

Celebrate good times!

Good food, good games, and most importantly good people! Our first Neighborhood Game Night was a great experience!

We just want to say Thank you to everyone who came to play and especially shout out to the ones who didn't come to play, like our first-place winner, Bella Bonner!

Our special Santa Cruz Black Family Feud had us laughing till we left the building and had our Game Night Champions smiling from cheek to cheek. We had so much fun with the community! We can't wait to see you all at our next event!

Black Experts Explain gives us the opportunity to sit down with local faces and names to learn more about events happening in our communities in Santa Cruz

This week: Former Mayor and current candidate for City Council Supervisor, Justin Cummings explains the current state of the Black Lives Matter mural.

Earlier this month on October 14th the coalition, Rise Together held an event where $400,000 was distributed in the form of grants that aim to assist communities of color. A $13,500 portion of that sum was granted to Justin Cummings on behalf of the Santa Cruz Equity Collaboration which initiated the creation of the Black Lives Matter mural in the Summer of 2020.

The grant for $13,500 is “To help fund events and activities related to the restoration and maintenance of the Black Lives Matter mural". For those who may be unaware, the mural was vandalized roughly a year after its creation. While those responsible for it being vandalized were identified, we still haven’t seen the mural get restored.

Cummings discussed with us the legal process that comes with situations like these and mentioned how much time it can take for conclusions to be reached. By receiving this grant Cummings and the Santa Cruz Equity Collaboration are working to quicken the process in a way that otherwise may not happen. When asked if this grant would be sufficient for restoring the mural Cummings said, “This grant can be used as leverage to gain more traction for the restoration” Hopefully this grant is only the beginning when it comes to receiving funding to restore the mural.
